Video editing rates on Upwork run from $10 to $60 per hour, while European studios that publish their pricing charge around €80 per hour net. Per-project, a set of 3–5 short social clips typically costs $200–600 and a 2–5 minute corporate video $1,000–3,000 on the same marketplace. What you pay depends mostly on footage volume, video length and the number of versions.

Here is how the main pricing models compare, what pushes rates up, and how to brief an editor so the quote stays predictable.

Rates differ by a factor of ten or more. That does not mean one provider is overpriced. Each one sells a different level of reliability, communication and responsibility.

Why the spread is so wide

At the low end you typically get a clean edit to a clear brief: order the shots, trim, add music. Higher up you pay for pacing, captions, platform-specific versions and an editor who pushes back on a weak structure. At studio rates you also pay for someone who thinks about the story with you.

So don't compare numbers alone. Compare what is included: revision rounds, captions, formats, music licences and turnaround.

What pushes video editing rates up

Footage volume

An editor has to watch what you send. Ten minutes of footage for a one-minute video is a different job from two hours. Upwork's guide estimates one to four hours of editing per finished minute; most of the spread comes from raw footage volume and complexity. If you have a long recording, mark the timestamps that matter.

Video type and length

A one-minute Reel and a five-minute multi-camera interview are two different jobs. Interviews and podcasts get more expensive with every extra camera and with audio clean-up.

Number of formats

A landscape YouTube video can't simply be cropped into a vertical Reel. Shots get re-framed, captions move, sometimes the length changes.

Captions, graphics and music

Captions are often a separate line item. Custom animation and motion graphics are priced separately. Music needs a licence for commercial use.

Revisions and delivery

Ask how many revision rounds are included. Unlimited revisions cost the editor time, so they are usually priced in. Agree on resolution, aspect ratio and codec; for social media, an MP4 in Full HD is usually enough. If you want project files, ask upfront.

Freelancer, online service or studio?

Freelancer

Pros: low rates, direct contact. Risks: variable quality and availability, no backup if they're ill. Works when you have time to select and supervise.

Online editing service

Pros: price upfront, clear process, fixed turnaround. Risks: less room for creative debate, defined scope. Works for recurring videos and teams that want results without meetings.

Subscription

Pros: steady capacity at a fixed monthly fee. Risks: you pay even in months you don't need video. Works if you publish weekly.

Production studio

Pros: filming and editing under one roof, concept and direction. Risks: higher cost, longer timelines. Works for campaigns, brand films and big events. More in corporate video cost.

When Cutito is not the right fit

  • You need filming. Cutito works with your footage only.
  • You need custom animation or motion graphics. A specialist studio will do it better.
  • You publish dozens of videos a month with one dedicated editor. A subscription or an in-house hire may suit you better.
  • Your budget is under $50 per video. A marketplace freelancer will cost less.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical hourly rate for a video editor?

Upwork lists $10–60 per hour for video editors on its platform. European production studios that publish rates charge more, for example €80 per hour net at one Berlin studio. Location, experience and specialisation explain most of the gap.

How many hours does it take to edit a video?

Upwork's hiring guide gives a rule of thumb of one to four hours of editing per finished minute. A five-minute video can therefore take five to 20 hours, depending on footage volume, graphics and audio work.

Is per-video pricing better than hourly?

Per-video pricing is predictable and suits recurring formats. Hourly pricing suits open-ended work such as documentaries or many hours of raw footage. If you pay hourly, always ask for an estimate and a cap.

What should be included in an editing quote?

Selection of shots, the edit itself, basic colour and audio correction, licensed music and export in the format you need. Check whether captions, extra aspect ratios and revision rounds are included or extra.
